The 12
Tags of Christmas |
|
In
the last several years Tim Holtz has offered some great
tutorials on how to make Christmas tags. This year we asked our
staff to create their own version of the "12 Tags of Christmas".
Our gift to you each
day before Christmas this year is instructions on
how to make two gorgeous tags! We hope you
are inspired by these tags and love them as much as
we have loved creating them! Merry Christmas!!

Let It Snow - by Dianne
Directions:
Cut
tag from pearly/shiny white cardstock using die. Stamp
snowflakes randomly on tag using Versamark Ink and then heat
emboss with silver embossing powder.
Cut a square of the Solid Grape Glitter Paper and adhere to tag
with Sookwang Tape (our strongest two-sided tape)
Cut beaded oval from blue cardstock and choose the right size
oval to cut from white cardstock for the stamped image in the
center. Stamp “Let it Snow” image on white cardstock oval.
Cut another oval the same size from the Sookwang Tape. Cover
paper oval with oval tape. Peel off top protective layer from
tape, then cover it generously with Warm Highlights glitter. Use
your fingertips to burnish (fancy word for rub) the glitter all
over. This burnishing will give the glitter layer a soft
satin-like feel.
Using Sookwang tape, now attach this piece to the blue beaded
oval.
Cut a rectangle from blue cardstock large enough to stamp
“Believe”. Stamp “Believe” with Dusty Concord Distress ink and
then heat emboss with silver embossing powder. Attach to tag
with pop-up dots
Attach Bell embellishment using Glue Dots. Loop a piece of
ribbon through hole in top of tag. Now just sit back. You are
done!

Santa Clock Tag - by
Darcy Nalder
Directions:
NOTE: Before you begin, turn
on melting pot and add wax so that it has time to melt while you are
making the tag.
Step 1: Apply black ink to Santa Stamp. Using your stamp mat, stamp your
Santa on the left hand side of the tag, just a little lower than center.
Step 2: Stamp a second Santa on a Post It Note making sure that you
stamp so that the Post It Note glue will be somewhere on the back side
of your Santa image. Cut out the Santa with a pair of scissors.
Step 3: Mask the Santa on your tag with the Post It Note Santa.
Step 4: Next Stamp Christmas Carols along the top right hand side of the
tag. Part of this image will stamp over your Santa but he will be OK
because he is protected by your Post It Note mask.
Step 5: Now take a second Post It Note and mask Christmas Carols. This
one you don’t have to cut out. Just make sure that you cover the words
mostly.
Step 6: Stamp over the two masked areas music notes. This image should
completely cover the Santa image and cover about half way up Christmas
Carols.
Step 7: Remove your masks.
Step 8: Using a blending tool, ink the tag with distress ink (Fired
Brick, Peeled Paint, Antique Linen). Refer to picture for color
placement.
Step 9: Once everything is inked, use a paper distressing tool to
distress all the edges of the tag.
Step 10: Use the ink pad to paper method and ink all the edges with
Walnut Stain Distress Ink.
Step 11: Using the scratcher tool, drag in a linear direction across the
tag to scratch through the ink layers and reveal core.
Step 12: Die cut a circle from your 2”x2” brown cardstock.
Step 13: Stamp Merry Christmas onto the vellum and set aside to dry.
Stamp with black ink the clock image on the circle and then immediately
sprinkle with black embossing powder. Dump off excess embossing powder.
Then heat with a heat tool (heat emboss). When image turns shiny black
it is done.
Step 14: Ink the edge of the clock with Vintage Photo Distress ink.
Step 15: Pierce a hole in the center of the clock and stick a black brad
through the hole. This is purely decorative. Glue clock to the top left
hand side of the tag with a pop dot.
Step 16: Tatter and roll the edges of your vellum Merry Christmas piece
and ink the edges with Antique Linen Distress Ink.
Step 17: Use a glue dot to hold the vellum in place while you do this
next part. Put the glue dot on the lower left hand side of the vellum,
right behind where you will be placing the wax because that way the glue
won’t show.
Step 18: Piece a hole through the tag just above the vellum piece (right
top edge) and place your Christmas Tree brad through the hole and make
sure the vellum is tucked under it a little ways because this will help
to also hold the vellum in place.
Step 19: Drop a few drops of wax onto your tag. You want about a dime
size bit of wax. Let the wax cool a little. If you blow on the wax
gently it will help cool it faster. When it turns from clear to white,
stamp a snowflake in the wax (I used an acrylic snowflake stamp from the
Inkadinkadoo set).
Step 20: Tie the ribbon in the hole at the top of the tag.
Step 21: Spread green and red stickles on the holly and berries along
Santa’s hat.

Strip Ribbon. Then remove the backing and stick the photos, face
to tape.

the Christmas tag (you can first color the paper clip red with
alcohol ink if you so desire).
Step 11: Put glue dots on the “For Goodness Sake” word strip and
attach to the tag. Use a stapler to decoratively accent the word
strips.
Step 12: Color the foliage (flower and leaves) with red and
green alcohol ink. When dry pierce a hole in the tag and attach
the foliage with a brad.
Step 13: Tie a piece of ribbon through the hole of the tag.

Cut
Tag from Burlap using die. Paint tag randomly with Snow Cap
Acrylic Paint. Using Artful Dwellings Die, cut house from Green
Kraft Core Cardstock, then cut out windows with Movers and
Shapers die. Now sand house to reveal inner core. Awesome!
Cut one inch off the bottom of the house and attach it to the
side of the house to form a “cabin”. Adhere house using glue
dots.
Cut a rectangle of metal to fit under house, on bottom portion
of tag. Distress the metal by hammering and scratching it.
Adhere to tag with glossy accents. Use black floss to “sew
around metal for an extra touch.

with any black ink.
Sew pen nib to mini calendar and adhere Calendar and sentiment
to metal using Glue Dots.
Die cut deer from black velvet cardstock, and stick to tag with

Use grey floss to “sew” some onto tag. Allow yourself to be
imperfect with all these sewing bits.
Add “snow” to the house using white Liquid Applique and heat
with heat tool to “raise” the snow.
Apply Glossy Accents wherever you want to have silver sparkles,
and dust with Silver Crushed Glass Glitter. Tap off excess.

Christmas Tree Scene Tag -
by Dianne
 Directions:
Stamp the pine boughs all over the tag using Versamark Ink, then heat
emboss with white embossing powder. These embossed areas will resist ink
– so awesome! Now you can spray the entire tag with Cranberry and
Lettuce Colorwashes. I sprayed mostly Cranberry with a few touches of
Lettuce here and there around the edges.
Cut both trees from Grunge Paper. Colour the large tree using Forest
Moss Distress Stain. Spray tree with Goosebumps. Melt beeswax in melting
pot according to manufacturer’s instructions. Spray the small tree with
Lettuce Colorwash, then dip into melted beeswax. CAUTION: Very Hot
Cut Picket Fence from Grunge Paper, then colour using Faded Jeans
Distress Stain. Embellish fence with Crackle Paint and Glass Glitter
(add glass glitter to Crackle Paint [only the Rock Candy one will do
this] and the crackle paint will act as an adhesive for the glitter).
Punch five small holes along right edge of tag and thread the leather
jute through the holes in a spiral form (see picture). Use bottom end of
the leather jute to go through the Christmas Muse Token. Adhere ends of
jute to back of tag using Glossy Accents.
Stamp “Season’s Greetings” onto Kraft Cardstock using Forest Moss Ink.
Tear carefully around stamped image, tearing towards you to create a
nice edge for inking. Ink Edges
Tag Assembly: Make sure you have already placed the Leather Jute and
token, so you can work around this. Attach large tree with thick pop-up
dots. Next adhere fence using Glossy Accents. Then the small tree can be
attached on top of the fence using Glossy Accents. Attach “Season’s
Greetings” with thick pop-up dots. Tie a piece of twine in hole at top
of tag.

Santa Tag
- by Dianne
Directions:
Using blending tool, ink tag with Forest
Moss and Barn Door Distress inks, to your liking. Stamp Santa with
Versamark, then heat emboss with Detail Black Distress Ink.
TIP: Though you can use any black distress ink, if the label says
“detail”, it will be a finer distress powder and will show more
definition in stamps such as this with a lot of detail.
Die cut two holly leaves. Distress leaves by sanding them, and this will
reveal the darker inner core. So cool!
Spray a piece of canvas with Cranberry Colourwash, then die cut
flourishes.
Put a bit of Fabric-tac glue on three areas of tag: two opposite
corners, and a bit down one side and adhere Mica Fragments.
For a beautiful shimmer, lightly spray the poinsettia with Copper
Perfect Pearls Mist.
Assemble tag: Adhere poinsettia using Fabric-tag glue (just adhere in
center so there is room to tuck in other embellishments). Adhere leaves
with a regular tape runner or Fabric Tac or the Sticker Maker.
Note: I recommend using the Xyron Sticker Maker for adhering the
flourish. The Sticker Maker is a fabulous tool for things such as
flourishes or lettering that can be finicky to glue. It saves both
stress and time by turning anything into a sticker!
With Fabric-tac Glue, adhere the Twister and Prima Rock Candy Stem, just
tucking them in behind the poinsettia.
Loop a red ribbon through the hole at the top and, Voila, a gorgeous

Old Jalopy Tag
Instructions
Step 1: cut out tree and jalopy with die cuts (from
chipboard). Be careful not to pop out the pieces for the jalopy just
yet. Step 2: Separate the tree from the backing and then ink
with pine needles distress ink and an applicator. While ink is still
wet, apply clear
embossing powder over the image and remove excess powder. Step 3: heat emboss with a
heat tool until powder becomes shiny and translucent showing the stamped green
ink. Step 4: Before separating the car pieces from the
backing, ink the car with black soot. You can easily see where the
pieces are and it is easier to ink them this way than as tiny little
pieces. Use an applicator to ink the cardboard well. Step 5: Working quickly so the ink doesn’t dry, pop the
car pieces from the backing and using glossy accents assemble and glue
the jalopy together. While the ink is still wet, apply black embossing
powder over the image and remove excess powder. Step 6: Heat emboss with heat tool.
Step 7: Apply Art Glitter Faux Snow adhesive here and
there on your tree. Don’t go crazy with the glue. You don’t want to
completely cover the tree . . . just accent it. Step 8: Take pinches of the Faux Snow and cover up the
glue. Be very generous. Gently pat over the snow to make it stick to
the adhesive. Dump off excess faux snow just like you did the embossing
powder. Step 9: Attach your tree to the roof of the car with a
12” piece of jute or twStep Step 10: Apply a generous layer of
matt
medium to a tag. A foam brush works well for this or an old paint brush.
NOTE: Glossy medium also works for this. Step 11: While the matt medium is wet, press a piece of
dictionary paper over the top of it. It doesn’t matter what words you
have, honest! And you don’t have to line anything up. Just completely
cover the tag. Step 12: Dry the paper with the heat tool until the tag
no longer feels damp (if it is cool to the touch it is still wet).
Step 13: Tear off all the excess paper from around the
tag. If you must you scissors you can but it really isn’t necessary.
Step 14: Press a piece of masking tape onto the paper
and rub it well with hand and a brayer to adhere it well to the paper.
Step 15: Slowly, and I mean SLOWLY, peel back the tape
and this will start to lift off some of the dictionary print revealing
random text on the back of the dictionary. This will make for a great
inking surface later. Step 16: Repeat going various directions. Remember
SLOWLY! You don't want to rip the paper and expose the tag which is
why we've removed the paper from around the edge first so it's doesn't
tear through the tag. NOTE: This technique is how you get rid of any
weird words on the dictionary paper you might have - I told you it
wasn't going to be a problem. When the tag is finished, you don’t see a
great deal of the dictionary words anyway. Step 17: Ink the tag with distress ink (Weathered Wood)
using a blending tool. Step 18: Drag a paper distressing tool along the edges
of the tag to tatter them. Step 19: Ink the edges with Vintage Photo distress ink
and a blending tool. Step 20: Stamp Merry Christmas on the upper left hand
corner of the tag with Aged Mahogany distress ink (have the tag going
long ways or landscape position with the hole of the tag to the left).
Be sure to stamp close to the left hand side so that your car doesn’t
cover up the words when it is later attached to the tag. Step 21: Stamp your flourishes where you like along the
left hand side of the tag. Use Vintage Photo distress ink. Step 22: Stamp a circle and the number 25 on the back of
a wooden game piece using Aged Mahogany distress ink and the My Favorite
Things Typewriter Alphabet stamps. Set aside to dry. Step 23: Tie another piece of twine or jute through the
tag hole (tie a bow) and attach a small metal ring through the hole of
the Muse Token and the hole of the mini pin. Then pin the Muse Token to
the twine bow. Step 24: Apply foam dots to the back of the car and then
stick in place on the tag. Step 25: Attach the wooden game piece onto the car with
glossy accents. When it is in place, apply a generous amount of glossy
accents to the face of the wooden game piece to create a shiny acrylic
bubble on the surface of the game piece. Let dry. |

Forest
Trees Tag
Instructions
Step 1: Shake Metallic Mixative and apply a squiggle of
ink to center of non-stick craft sheet (less is more in this case).
Step 2: Apply various drips, drops and squiggles of
several colors of alcohol inks over the mixative and various places.
It is OK if the inks blend. Step 3: Dribble a little bit of blending solution over
the ink mixture on the mat. The more blending solution you add, the
lighter your background will be. Step 4: Place glossy cardstock face down and twist paper
into the ink. Glossy cardstock is not the same as glossy photo paper.
Glossy cardstock is clay coated and designed to absorb inks. Photo
paper is emulsion based and will cause a chemical reaction and get very
sticky. Step 5: Slide paper up off of craft sheet.
Step 6: Place background back into same ink and twist
again for a second layer. Step 7: Slide paper up off craft sheet to reveal
background. You want all the white covered. Two layers is good. Any
more than that and it can get a bit muddy looking. Step 8: This is an optional step. If you have ink left
over from your first background, add more blending solution and repeat
above steps with another piece of glossy cardstock. Step 9: Stamp trees on the left hand side with black
Memento ink. The alcohol ink should be completely dry before doing this
step. Immediately sprinkle with black embossing powder, tap off the
excess and then heat emboss with a heat tool. The black trees will
become shiny black when the emboss is finished. Step 10: Stamp stars up on the top right hand corner
with Distress Embossing Ink and then immediately sprinkle with silver
embossing powder, tap off the excess again and then heat emboss with a
heat tool. The stars will turn shiny silver when the heat embossing is
complete. Step 11: Stamp It’s a Wonderful Life on a piece of grungeboard that is 1”x4” and has had the corners rounded. Step 12: Ink snow flurries with the white ink and a
flourish stamp on the lower left hand corner. Dry with the heat tool.
Step 13: Speckle little white dots of White Enamel
randomly over the trees and background. Step 14: Ink the grungeboard and all the edges of a #8
tag with Distress Ink using an Ink Blending Tool. Use the blues on the
grungeboard but add black after you have applied the blues to the tag
(Faded Jeans, Weathered Wood and Black Soot). Step 15: Pierce a hole through the one end of the It’s a
Wonderful Life grungeboard piece. Put a silver brad through the hole.
On the other end of the grungeboard stick an acrylic sticker of a
snowflake. Step 16: Apply adhesive to the back side of the grungeboard piece and then stick it just right of the trees.
Step 17: Apply adhesive to the back of the glossy paper
piece and stick it onto the tag. Step 18: Tie a piece of silver cord along the top edge
of the glossy paper and tie a single knot over the stars. Step 19: Tie a white ribbon through the top hole of the
tag. Step 20: Pop dot a paper snowflake onto the top left
hand corner of the tag and clip a mini clothespin onto the snowflake.
Attach the snowflake to the tag with a small glue dot. Step 21: Add two more acrylic snowflakes where ever you
desire onto the tag. |

Wish Upon A Star
- by Dianne

Stamp background swirl/flourish with Aged Mahogany.
Using blender tool, apply Vintage Photo ink all over tag. Tear a
strip of Striped Glitter paper (tear towards you to get an edge
suitable for inking), then ink edges of this piece with Vintage
Photo.
Cut two stars using Sizzix Die; one from Red Kraft core paper,
and one from Dark Chocolate glitter paper. Emboss red star and
ink all over with Vintage Photo using blender tool. Make sure
you are inking the side with the raised impression.
Attach glitter star to tag using any permanent adhesive.
Adhere Prima Leaves and Twister with Fabric-tac glue.
Use Glue & Seal to adhere Mica Flakes to two corners of red
star. Tie piece of brown twine around red star. Next, use thick
pop-up dots to attach red star. Add “Believe in the magic” word
stickers. |

'Tis The Season
- by Dianne

Cut tag using Basic Glitter Paper. Using blending tool and
Broken China, ink tag lightly all over. The glittery swirls on
the paper will resist the ink. Cool!
Use Spellbinders to cut shape out of specialty paper.
Stamp carollers with Broken China ink, also ink edges of shape
with Broken China, using blending tool.
Use swirl die to cut swirls from Silver Glitter Paper.
Cut rectangle from light blue card stock, large enough to show
from behind Carollers piece. Round corners.
Adhere two flourishes as shown in picture, over blue
rectangle. Use pop-up dots to attach stamped caroller piece.
Attach two pieces of tulle to opposite corners behind
Carollers using Fabric-tac.
Stamp “Tis the Season” on blue cardstock with Versamark
and heat emboss with silver embossing powder. Cut to fit, and
adhere to bottom of tag.
Adhere piece of Petaloo Stem, tucking it under caroller
piece, then add star pin and snowflake embellishment. Fabric-tac
works great for all of these.
Again using Fabric-tac, adhere a bit of Shaved Ice to
snowflake. Finish with a pretty ribbon through hole in tag
