Memories Deserve More Than A Shoebox TM

Stop fretting over those colors!

Are you making a simple scrapbook? If so, it's important to know about colors! The right colors in a simple scrapbook can make or break a layout. With colors, it's either divine or disastrous. Pick your best color using these handy ideas!

Believe me when I say, you aren't the only one having problems with picking colors for your scrapbook layout. I used to have the hardest time figuring out what colors to use. My eyes have always been overly drawn to BRIGHT colors. I would finish a layout and say, "WOW, that page is wonderful, but the colors don't look all that great." I would get frustrated and want to start all over. Today, I have a new outlook on color coordinating.

While looking at your photos, ask yourself:

1. What colors are visible in my photos?

Blue, green, or purple. Note all the colors in your photo. Which ones stand out at you most?

2. What color is everyone wearing?

What color is little Jimmy's t-shirt? Is that a peacock print shirt mom has on? Use colors from the photo. Let them be your inspiration.

3. Where is the picture taken?

Sometimes you can use colors that relate to a certain type of place; like the park, beach, or zoo. It makes your story more convincing if your colors match your pictures and journaling.

4. Is there traditional colors for your photo's theme?

If the picture is of a baby boy or baby girl, should you go with the traditional blue for boys and pink for girls? If it is a wedding picture, go with a white or ivory. Silver also goes great with traditional wedding photos.

5. Would a bright color relay the mood or attitude behind your photo?

Is your photo of a fun or comical time? Do you want that memorable time to come through your layout? Try using a bright green or pink to bring through the fun side of your photo!

In a simple scrapbook, the easiest way to use great color with minimal effort is by choosing a central color and then accent using lighter or darker shades of that same color. Use the central color as a background and use the lighter and darker colors for matting photos or journaling. The possibilities are endless!

Remember, in simple scrapbooking, as with any other photo scrapbook...your pictures should get all the attention. Try not to use too many distracting colors. Also, don't be afraid to let loose and experiment! Have fun with it! People are doing beautiful things with color these days! I'm sure with the right amount of patience and creativity, you can make your own masterpiece of memories!
