FISKARS® ShapeBoss
Embossing Instructions

Gather Supplies
  • Fiskars® ShapeBoss™ Tray
  • Positioning Pegs
  • Dual-Tip Stylus
  • Stencil Set (one top and one bottom)
  • Paper, 65 lb. cardstock is recommended

Set-Up the Tray

  1. Place the stencil labeled Bottom on tray (fig 1). Bottom stencil is gray.

  2. Place the stencil labeled Top over the bottom stencil matching all parts of the design. Top stencil is clear with grid.
  3. Insert two pegs in opposite corners to secure both stencils.

Position the Paper

  1. Slide paper between the two stencils (fig 2).

  2. Position your paper to the design that you wish to emboss.
  3. Add and/or reposition pegs to accommodate paper and secure stencils.

NOTE: The part of the paper to be raised should face down. When flipped over, the embossed design will be reversed.

Emboss

  1. Choose the stylus with the largest ball burnisher tip that will fit for each stencil design.
  2. Applying consistent downward pressure outline the stencil design with the stylus (no need to rub in the middle). (fig 3)

  3. For crisp edges, trace around two or more times.
  4. Remove paper from between stencils.
  5. Flip paper and view your beautiful design!

FISKARS® ShapeBoss
System Tips & Techniques

  • If the burnishing tip does not glide easily on your cardstock, rub area with wax paper or your hand before embossing. This will smooth the paper and simplify your task.
  • Begin by practicing on scrap paper. For best results, use 65 lb. or heavier cardstock. Also try embossing thin metals, foils and vellums.
  • The tray fits a full 8-1/2" x 11" sheet, but you can emboss any size by shifting the paper and repositioning the pegs as you go along.
  • When embossing, letters and patterns should appear backwards while working. When flipped, the embossed design will read correctly.
  • To maximize the raised effect and sharpen edges, first emboss with a large ball burnishing tip of stylus. Next, use a smaller ball burnishing tip and retrace one or more times until desire look is achieved.
  • For multi-dimensional effect or layered embossing, try embossing smaller designs inside of larger ones. For special effects, enhance embossed areas with chalks, markers, paints, glitter, etc.
  • To Deboss (opposite of emboss or to press design in), position stencils on the tray with right sides down. Be sure to keep stencil labeled "Bottom" on bottom and stencil labeled "Top" on top. Position paper between stencils. Using stylus, trace the designs. Since you are working on the finished side of your project, the design will be pressed in or debossed.
  • Combine embossing and debossing techniques for a unique look!
  • Experiment with other FISKARS® ShapeBoss™ tools for the stylus that best suits your project needs. Also available, Small Dual-tip Ball Burnisher and Spoon Burnisher.
  • Clean stencils with lanolin-free baby wipes. Use cotton swaps for cleaning the cut edges.
